Monterey, Carmel & Point Lobos Photography Workshops & Tours
California’s central coast along the Monterey Peninsula and Carmel is wildly popular with photographers and nature lovers, and for good reason: there are historic seaside towns with Spanish-influenced architecture and vividly decorated buildings, an extensive array of wildlife, hearty wildflowers and beautiful ocean views, and weather as dramatic as the thunderous crash of untamed surf against land’s end. Source Photography’s photo tours of Monterey, Carmel and Point Lobos combine these elements into unforgettable day-long and multi-day photography workshop adventures.
“…a poem…a quality of light, a tone, a habit, a nostalgia, a dream.”
This oft-quoted line from John Steinbeck is as true today as it was when he wrote his 1945 opus to Monterey and the eclectic people who lived around this former Sardine processing hub. During our Monterey photography workshops you will experience the contrasting, yet perfectly blended Old-world charm and modern coastal vibrance that makes Monterey such an incredible subject for writers and photographers alike. We explore Old Town and its historic structures, and the bustling Wharf with its marina full of sailboats and buildings painted in a kaleidoscope of color.
Our photography workshops drift along the shore of Monterey Bay, where we photograph furry sea otters floating and feeding in the nearby kelp beds, California Brown Pelicans as they glide mere inches above the sea, and playful seals and sea lions as they swim along the shore and sunbathe on rock outcrops. Gnarled Monterey Pines provide wonderful framing for landscapes and seascapes, and low clouds add drama to every shot. Photo tours on chartered boats are available seasonally to take you out over the deepest ocean trench on the west coast and give you an up-close photographic encounter with blue, grey, humpback and stunning Orca whales, several dolphin species, and a countless variety of sea birds.
In nearby Carmel-by-the-Sea, the laid-back artists’ colony the LA Times called the “Hotbed of Soulful Culture,” our professional photo tour guides take you to neighborhoods with eclectic streetscapes, and you will get a chance to use our lighting equipment to photograph models on one of Carmel’s fantastic sandy beaches. Some photography workshops include stops in Pacific Grove, on the western tip of the Monterey peninsula, where uncountable thousands of delicate orange and black Monarch Butterflies gather annually during their long migration across North America.
“The greatest meeting of land and water in the world.”
Given the unrelenting beauty of the California coast, that’s quite an audacious statement. But once you participate in our instructional photography workshop at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, you’ll understand why famed landscape artist Francis McComas was so bold. Point Lobos packs a visual wallop! Our photo tours guide you through the reserve’s headlands, rolling meadows and forests populated by black-tailed deer, lichen-covered cypress trees and Monterey Pines. We take you to hidden coves and rugged shores where the bark of sea lions can be as loud as the surf, and seals sleep on the protected sandy shores. During the turn-of -the-century, a thriving whaling and abalone industry was based here, and a small cabin built by Chinese fishermen remains at Whalers Cove. Model photography at Point Lobos often includes a backdrop of waves exploding against the unusual formations of conglomerate rock just offshore. The natural beauty of Point Lobos is powerful – and sublime.
